Fables' New Cover Artist...

Postby Bill Willingham on Tue Oct 14, 2008 11:16 am

Just a quick note to tell you that we've selected the new cover artist for Fables, but I'm not yet going to tell you who he is.

Here's what I can say now:

James Jean's final cover is/will be Fables 81, and it will be a doozy.

Then Mark Buckingham will provide the cover to Fables 82, which will be a single-issue follow-up story to an event that happens in the Dark Ages story arc. I can't tell you anything about this story, or about the cover, other than to say the cover is marvelous (and just a bit heart rending -- so don't be surprised if we keep it censored, until the issue actually hits the stands).

Then, with issue 83, the first issue of the Fables/Jack of Fables/Literals crossover, the new cover artist comes on board. He will at least do the covers for the entire arc, and, depending on several factors, possibly go on to do the Fables covers from then on.

In the meantime, our own massively-talented Bucky will provide the covers to the Literals issues of the crossover, in addition to drawing the Literals issues.

And since I've probably said much more than I should have, I'll shut up for now. Ask any questions you like about the above announcements, but I doubt I'll be able to provide any more information.

Cool beans. Thanks so much for the update. Can you tell us yet what the next arc (after Dark Ages) is going to be called?

The next arc after Dark Ages is the crossover. For now it's called the crossover, but will probably get its own title so that the collection will scan a bit better. The Fables arc following that has a name, but revealing it would reveal too much of what happens in the Dark Ages, so mum's the word for now.

And yes, each month during the crossover you will get three Fables-related books. In order each month they will be: Fables, Jack of Fables, and The Literals, for a total of nine issues (three months times three books) all of which will be collected in the Fables collection immediately following the Dark Ages Fables collection.

I'm glad that my 2,000th post was about how exciting it would be to get 3 issues of Fables-related goodness per month!

You know... I've been itching to tell people about that stuff for weeks.... I 'm so excited to be doing a Fables Cover ( but it's a VERY TOUGH ACT TO FOLLOW ON FROM JAMES!!!! So much PRESSURE. ARRGHH ! ) Then the Literals with Covers as well.... great opportunity to design the whole package!
And all this on top of my favorite Fables Arc in years ... The Dark Ages is one of the best things Bill's ever written!
Best,
Bucky

This sounds awesome, and a Bucky cover to top it off. The next 9 months sound fantastic.

I am very pleased with all of these announcements (although still upset that James Jean has to leave in the first place).

I really look forward to see Mr. Buckingham's covers! I'm sure they will be fantastically amazing, just as his regular art is amazing and his painted work for 1001 nights was super amazing!

So the Literals crossover is April-May-June. Any word on when the Cinderella mini will be out, or who may be doing the covers for it? I'm guessing it would be Summer 2009 at the earliest, although I'd love to get 4 Fables-related issues a week for a few months :)

Agh! One day Bill will produce me a heart attack.

A Dark Ages story! Great!
Three issue per month by three months! Greater!
A Bucky cover! Greatest!

Just in case no one else noticed, it looks like James Jean did not draw a new wrap-around cover for War and Pieces, which is a shame. Vertigo's website has what looks like the official cover for that collection.

No wrap around cover? That's just not okay!

Ok, can you confirm if the new Fables cover artist is a mineral, a vegetable or an animal?

(NOTE: This is from a children's game in Spanish. Having never been a child in English, I'm not sure if my question travels across cultures).
